Electric Dog Fence Uses

November 4th, 2011

In recent studies in the United States, about 45.6 million American Citizens have a dog at home and 77 million dogs are owned. Dogs are the most popular pet owned in the US due to the health benefits and the compatibility that they give. To secure their pets, owners often buy a product called an electric dog fence that secures their pets inside or outside their houses and backyards. The device functions as a territorial marker that gives a signal to dogs when they are approaching a boundary. This is most beneficial for pets who do not obey a master’s call or those with nasty attitude of wandering in the neighborhood.

An electric dog fence functions as an area landmark. The pet owner defines and sets the locations that the pet is supposed to stay. Invisible dog fence is usually used and installed in their backyard. On the other hand, a digital collar is worn on the dog that receives the signal. When a dog comes near a territorial landmark, the collar produces a sound as a warning to stop. If the dog disobeyed the warning and continuously went in the location, a mild electric shock is sent from the collar. This gives a surprise and a punishment method to dogs. Most owners train their dogs to properly react to this signal. It not only keeps the dog away from harm but also reduces its bad attitude.

There are basically two functions of a dog fence. The first one is the trigger zone described above. This helps in maintaining the dog in its allowed territory that keeps them safe. Dogs that wander on the streets have a high chance of being involved in an accident. Also, dogs that are known to run and scare joggers can be trained to just bark inside the area and careless running around. The other function of an electric dog fence is being an exclusion zone. You can customize the territory that will be kept out of place for dogs so that they would not go near it. Sample locations that you would not want your dog to be are pools, patio, garden and playground for children. Dogs in these areas may cause trouble and a dog fence keeps them away.

Veterinarians have recognized the need of the device not only for the importance of security that it brings but also due to the aspect of training a pet. It is recommended that electric dog fences are combined with training so that dogs can instill in their minds the proper action when their master wants them to not move around. Products available in the market are all tested and proven safe. Purchasing and using one is a great way to secure and teach your pet at home.
